Obituary for Cara Pearl Briggs Withers (1926-1981)

            Cara Pearl WITHERS was born near Troy, Mo. January 19, 1926, the daughter of James W. and Alice TEASLEY BRIGGS. She passed away at her residence in Derby, Kansas, Friday  morning, May 29, 1981, at the age 55 years 4 months and 10 days.

            On August 13, 1955, she was united in marriage to John WITHERS.

            She was preceded in death by her father, James W. BRIGGS, one brother, J.B. BRIGGS, and one sister, Mary BRIGGS.

            She is survived by her devoted husband, John WITHERS of their residence; her mother, Mrs. Alice BRIGGS of Troy; one sister, Sara and her husband, Don MOXLEY of Troy; two brothers; Howard BRIGGS and his wife Imogene of Troy and LeRoy BRIGGS and his wife, Jean of O’Fallon; one brother-in-law, C. E. WITHERS and his wife, Kate of St. Louis County; a number of nieces and nephews; several aunts and uncles; cousins and innumerable friends.

            In her youth Mrs. WITHERS became a member of Troy Methodist  Church, now St. Stephen United Methodist Church  of Troy. After she and her husband moved to St. Louis County, they became members of  the Ellisville United Methodist Church, where her membership remained.

            After graduation  from high school, Mrs. WHITHERS attended Culver Stockton College at Canton, and later transferred to Northeast Missouri University, Kirksville, Mo., where she received her degree, which was in education.

            Her first school was in Lincoln County. This was the Monroe School where she taught in 1943-1944. In  1944-1945 she taught the New Salem School. She came into the Troy School system in 1948, where during her years in that school she taught 4th, 6th and high school classes. After moving to St. Louis County, she taught in the Riverview Gardens School district until her retirement in the early ‘60s.

            Funeral services for Mrs. WITHERS were held at 3:30 in the afternoon of Sunday, May 31, from the St. Stephen United Methodist Church of Troy. The pastor, the Rev. Benny Wilsey, assisted by the Rev. Lester Zacher, conducted the services. Mrs. Russel Pavelka was the organist.

            Interment was in the Old Alexandria Cemetery, Troy. Casket bearers were Monte MOXLEY, Jim MOXLEY, Ed HOPKINS, Terry BRIGGS,   Jim BRIGGS, David BRIGGS, Ray MEYER and Gary PHILLIPS.

            Arrangements were through the Kemper Marsh Funeral Home of Troy.
