Troy Free Press, Lincoln County, Missouri, Friday Morning, February 14, 1941

John E. Thompson Dies

John E. THOMPSON, 81 years old, formerly of the Winfield vicinity, died in St. Mary’s Hospital at Maquon, Ill., Thursday, February 6.

Mr. THOMSPON had been taken to the hospital three weeks before after fracturing one hip in a fall at the home of his son, Montie THOMPSON of Galesburg, Ill., where he had lived for a number of years past. He never recovered from this injury.

Mr. THOMPSON was a son of John R. and Mary THOMPSON, and was born near Little Rock, Ark., March 9, 1859.

At an early age, he came to Lincoln County, and in 1888 was united in marriage to Paulina COTTLE, who preceded him in death 45 years ago. A daughter, Dona HAMMER, also preceded him in death. To this union were born two other children, Mrs. Laura ANDERSON of St. Louis, and Montie THOMPSON, of Galesburg.

Later he married to Mecie SPRINGSTUN, who preceded him in death in 1915.

After a profession of faith, he united with the Christian Church at Moscow Mills, and lived a consistent Christian life.

For the past 20 years he had made his home with his son at Galesburg, where he was lovingly cared for during his declining years.

Besides his son and daughter, he leaves to mourn his departure: two step-children, Mrs. Laura JOHNSON, of St. Louis; and William SPRINGSTUN, of Peoria, Ill., 6 grandchildren, Norma THURMAN, of Kansas City, Edna B. DEPPING, of Moscow Mills, and Betty, Robert, John E., and Annabel THOMPSON of Galesburg; 2 great-grandchildren, Nancy and Gary THOMPSON THURMAN of Kansas City.

Funeral services were conducted at the Troy Christian Church Sunday afternoon and his only request fulfilled when he was laid to rest by his companion in Thornhill Cemetery, near Troy.
