In Memoriam – Claudine SMITH

Into the home of our friend and neighbor, J. S. SMITH, on Sunday night, January 18, 1914 came death to claim his daughter Claudine. She and her twin sister, Lucile, were the first born of his children and since the death of their mother, Katie MAYES-SMITH, little more than a year ago, have been the directors of the household, willingly doing homely duties, caring for the younger brothers, and sister, attending school, Bible school and church. Claudine and Lucile were born October 2, 1898, from babyhood were objects of unusual interest and affection, not only in the homes of parents, grandparents and relatives but to all who knew them with their years they increased in favor. Very early in life they learned to aid an invalid mother, thus patiently developing lives exceptionally free from selfishness.

Together these loving sisters attended school and were beloved by school mates, and teachers. Together they regularly attended church, and with others of their Bible class, confessed their Savior and were baptized by their esteemed pastor, G. V. Ferguson, November 17, 1913. Together these sisters lived their fifteen years, models of filial obedience and devotion to duty. Claudine was always the more delicate of health and was shielded accordingly, but contracted pneumonia which caused her death. The funeral rite was conducted at Linn Knoll, Tuesday, after which the sacred clay was piously laid in the Oak Ridge church yard beneath masses of floral beauty.

“None knew her but to love her, none named her but to praise”
