William Thomas SHIELDS,

son of Thomas and Sarah SHIELDS, was born April 10, 1845. He was one of eleven children, all of whom have preceded him to the grave except one, Joseph. He was married to Sarah A. DORSEY Oct. 12, 1866, and settled near the elder SHIELDS' homestead in Eastern Lincoln County, MO. To them were born 7 children, two of whom died in infancy. Those remaining, are: Mrs. Susan MAGRUDER, Mrs. Kate LARUE, Mahlon, J. A., and Mrs. Minnie TERRELL.

Bro. SHIELDS professed religion, and united with the New Salem Baptist church about '75 or '76 and through the years to the end lived in its fellowship. His was an honorable, upright, consistent life and his death, which occurred at the home of his son Mahlon, October 11, 1918, was in the triumph of a "kept” faith. He told the writer during his illness that he realized his days would be few and that he was resigned and ready for the call “over there”.

Funeral services were held at New Salem Saturday, Oct. 12, at l p. m. Many relatives and friends paid a tribute of honor by attending the service. The "reaper" is so busy with "sickle" in this time of the world's history that there is consolation that when a sheaf fails it is fully ripened and that it can be garnered with tenderness, tears and flowers.

May the further consolation of His grace comfort the bereaved.--O.A. Gordon
