Death of John H. REYNOLDS

John H. REYNOLDS, life-long resident of the White Swan community, east of Whiteside, passed away Monday morning at the family home following months of declining health, at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 9 days. His death was a distinct shock to the community in which he had spent his long life and where he was held in the highest esteem.

Mr. REYNOLDS was the twelfth of a family of thirteen children of the late George and Jane MITCHELL REYNOLDS, and Charles and Albert are the only surviving members of this once large family of splendid citizens.

He was married to Miss Georgia WELCH, of Troy, on March 24, 1887. Two children were born of this union—Madge, now Mrs. Cary BARTON, of St. Charles, and Ralph, at home. "Uncle Johnny", as he was familiarly called, professed faith in his Maker early in the present century and united with the Methodist church under the ministry of Rev. Clyde W. GOW, affiliating with Smith Chapel church. From this time until the end of his earthly servitude he lived a consistent Christian life. His minister said of him:

"He was a kind and loving husband and father, a loyal friend and neighbor. In fact, the poem about the man who lived in the house at the side of the road and was the friend of man might well have been written about John REYNOLDS, for he possessed those characteristics to a marked degree. He went about doing good and so long as his health and strength permitted, he never neglected to visit those who were sick or in distress and brought help and cheer into many homes during the dark hours. He will be missed in the home and in the community where he spent his entire life."

Funeral services were held at Mill Creek church at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. H. SHERMAN. Pastor of Elsberry and Smith Chapel Methodist churches, and interment was made in Mill Creek cemetery.

He is survived by his widow, two children, two brothers and many relatives and friends.

[Contributor’s note: John H. REYNOLDS was born January 18, 1855 and died July 27, 1936.]
