OBITUARIES OF SALEM REID AND HIS WIFE MARY JANE SHANNON

Salem Reid, son of Thos. S. and Adeline Reid, was born August 15, 1841, and died April 12, 1912. He was an elder at Mt. Zion for twenty-nine years, and having joined the church when a young man was a consistent and loyal member as long as he lived. Was a man of strong conviction and singleness of purpose. Only a few months before his death, he connected himself with the A. R. P. church at Elsberry, Mo. Was very much interested in the work there. We mourn the loss of such a man, but what was our loss, we believe to be his gain; "and we know that all things work together for good to those that love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord."
Mr. Reid was married to Mary Jane Shannon who together with two sons and four daughters still survive.
Also one brother, Thos. Reid of Elsberry is among those who mourn the loss. We commend these to the love and sympathy of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.

We were all greatly shocked when we heard that, on Wednesday the twenty-third of February, Mrs. Mary Jane Reid met with an accident, having fallen from a chair upon which she was standing; and that there was not much hope of her recovery. She only partially regained consciousness and lingered until Monday evening February the twenty-eighth [1916] when she fell asleep. It is supposed that death was caused by concussion of the brain.
Mrs. Reid was born near Brussels Mo., February 27, 1847, hence she was 69 years and one day old. Her maiden name was Mary Jane Shannon. Early in childhood she professed Christ at Mt. Zion A. R. P. church and was a devoted Christian and a consistent member of that church until a few years ago when she connected with the newly organized A. R. P. church at Elsberry. She was among the active forces of the church. She was a constant reader of God's word. Whe loved her Saviour, and loved to meet with God's people especially in the sanctuary.
She was married to Salem Reid April 1, 1868 who went to his rest nearly four years ago. To this union were born six children, M. Reid, Mrs. D. C. Reid, Miss Adeline, Mrs. W. A. Reid, Mrs. T. H. Mitchell, all of whom live to call her blessed, and to perpetuate the life of her whom God has called higher. "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord."
Mrs. Reid will be remembered by many of our church, especially the ministers that have attended Presbytery and Synod at Mt. Zion.

Salem Reid was the son of Thomas Shannon Reid and his first cousin, Adaline Montgomery Reid (Reid is also her maiden name). Mary Jane Reid was the daughter of John A. R. Shannon and Elizabeth McCampbell, all of whom lived in Lincoln County, Missouri. The children listed in Mary Jane's obituary were:The photograph of Salem Reid is with his grand daughters, Callie Basket Reid (Mrs. William Long) (standing) and Mary Foley Reid (Mrs. James Raymond Brown) (seated), daughters of Montgomery Reid and Georgia Basket. The brother Thomas Reid mentioned in Salem's obituary was married to Elizabeth Shannon, sister of Mary Jane. Attention is also directed to the Family Bible of Salem Reid and Mary Jane Shannon and to the Reid Cemetery near Okete where this family is buried.
