Obituary for Jane (Shannon) Reid
aka Mrs. Alexander Reid

Died, on the 2d day of August, 1855, in Lincoln Co., Mrs. Jane Reid, in the 89th year of her age.
She was the widow of Alexander Reid, who having served his generation in both civil and ecclesiastical functions, had preceded her entrance on eternity by nearly nineteen years. They were natives of Virginia, and emigrated to Kentucky in early times; where they remained long enough to make their mark on society very perspicuous. Thence they emigrated to Missouri in 1833, soon after which she was left a widow.
The subject of this notice had connected herself with the A. R. Church [Associate Reformed Presbyterian] in early life and lived in that connection to the day of her death. When the writer first made her acquaintance, (some twelve years ago,) the active portion of her life had gone by; and she silently walked the shores of death in prospect. Her children (six in number) had been gathered into the church; all but one, and that one soon after cast in his lot with them. The infirmities of age she endured as seeing him that is invisible. By faith she seemed to inherit the promises. Her prominent characteristics were candor, uniformity and contentment. Her reading in the eve of life was confined chiefly to the Scriptures, and especially to the Psalms. Her last illness was brief, and her exit without a struggle.
Contributor's Note: Jane Reid was born Jane Shannon, the daughter of Thomas Shannon and Mary or Polly Reid, on April 22, 1767 in Virginia (probably Amherst County. On March 4, 1790 in Amherst County Virginia she was married to her cousin, Alexander Reid, the son of James Reid and Annes Reid. Soon after their marriage they migrated to Shelby County Kentucky. Contrary to the obituary, the couple had a total of nine children, eight of whom survived to adulthood, and six of whom were alive at the time of Jane's death. After migrating with many of these children to Lincoln County, Alexander and Jane were founding members of the Mt. Zion Associate Reform Presbyterian congregation at Okete. Jane and Alexander were buried in the
