MISS BELLE RANEY DIES AGE 101

Miss Hannah Belle RANEY, 101 years of age, died at the Lincoln County Memorial Hospital early Saturday morning , March 15, 1969, where she had been a patient since the preceding week.

Miss RANEY was one of, if not the oldest, citizens of Lincoln County.

She enjoyed good health until just a short time before entering the hospital.

She was born north of Troy, Jan. 23, 1868, the daughter of Felix and Hannah MORRIS RANEY. She was the youngest of 13 children, and the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She lived in Briscoe most of her life, where she was recognized as an exceptionally fine seamstress.

Fifteen years ago, she moved to Troy and lived with a niece, Mrs. W. F. RINAMAN.

For the past two years she had been living in the William HENDERSON home of Troy.

Funeral services for "Aunt Belle" as she was affectionately known, were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Old Alexandria Methodist Church, of which she was a member. The ministers were Rev. Ted G. Matkin and Rev. Joseph Todd.

Interment was in the Old Alexandria Cemetery.

Surviving are the following nieces and nephews: Mrs. Mabel RINAMAN and Mrs. Dale BRISCOE, of troy, Mrs. Betty GLADNEY, of Elsberry, Mrs. Flo WATSON, of White Hall, Illinois; Mrs. Lottie HOWERTON and Mrs. Morrie SMITH of Granite City, Illinois; and Miss Laura Grace RANEY of Winfield; Arch TAYLOR, of Elsberry; Ted TAYLOR and Walter RANEY, of Troy and Ollie RANEY, of St. Louis.

Arrangements were through the Kemper-Marsh Funeral Home of Troy.

[additional info. from another obituary with no name or date is: ]

While living near Old Alexandria Methodist Church, she professed her faith in Christ from whom she trusted throughout her long and useful life. The family moved to Briscoe, where she became active in the Briscoe Methodist Church, and for many years, she taught a Sunday School Class in that church. Although she lived most of her life in Briscoe, she retained her membership in the Old Alexandria Methodist Church.

Preceding her in death besides her parents were the following brothers and sisters; Amanda Elizabeth WHEATLEY, John RANEY, James RANEY, Laura N. RANEY, Angeline TEASLEY, Jacob RANEY, Jane Alice RANEY, Felix RANEY Jr., Jonah RANEY, Henry RANEY, Thomas RANEY, and Mrs. Susan TAYLOR. Aunt Belle lived more than a year over a century, a priviledge accorded very few people. ....her life time spanned the years from the era of the post - Civil War days, through the major and minor conflicts of the nation and the world.........

Funeral services....Musicians were Mrs. Henry Arnold and Mrs. Gene Chapman.

Casket bearers were George Wells, Junior Stone, James Zumwalt, Jewell Raney, Homor Cox, and William Henderson.

[Transcriber's notes:

( I believe this is the Briscoe Union Church, not Briscoe Methodist Church..all denominations were welcomed there. I went there as a child. My mother was Baptist and her dad & mother (my grandparents) were from the Methodist and Christian church.. jg)

I will list all the tombstones of family mentioned that I have records for.
