Obituary for Philomene Muck (1899-1987)

Miss Philomene MUCK passed away at 6:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1987 at the Lincoln County Memorial Hospital in Troy following a lengthy illness. She had attained the age of 87 years, four months and six days.

Miss MUCK was born on Sept. 27, 1899 in Troy, the only child of John and Mary Elizabeth MEISTER MUCK. She attended the Troy public schools and following graduation from Buchanan High School went to Kirksville State Teachers College where she obtained her teaching degree. Miss MUCK returned to Lincoln County and was a teacher for 47 years in the Lincoln County and Troy School Systems. Her first teaching assignment was at the Hawk Point School and the remainder in the Troy city system. She devoted her entire working career to the betterment of Lincoln County’s students and inspired many of them with her belief in the need for education. Miss MUCK was proud of all of her students’ accomplishments and never missed a class reunion as long as her health permitted.

Miss MUCK was very devoted to her parents and several other close relatives that she lovingly cared for until the time of their passing. She was very proud of her community and was active in many civic organizations throughout the years. She belonged to the Rebekahs Lodge, Business and Professional Women’s Group, The Builders Federated Club, Retired Teachers Group, TACOA, OATS Bus Group, and was a charter member of the Lincoln County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Her church work was also very important to her; and she was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Troy, belonging to the CWF organization and was Sunday School secretary for many years.

Surviving are, one uncle, Walter MEISTER; four cousins, Julius MEISTER and his wife, Lorene, Marguerite SCHEMMER and her husband, Arthur, Elsie RANEY and her husband, Jewel and Viola OWEN, all of Troy. Miss MUCK is further survived by a special friend of 40 years, Miss Nella STICE of Troy, many other relatives and a host of friends. Miss MUCK was preceded in death by her mother on Sept.22, 1949 and her father on May 9, 1962.

Miss Philomene MUCK will be sadly missed and not forgotten by all those whose lives she touched through her many years of teaching and being a part of this community.

Visitation was held from 3-9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, 1987 and from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday at the McCoy & Blossom Funeral Home and from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Services at the First Christian Church of Troy with the Rev. Kendale D. Finley officiating. Interment was in the Troy City Cemetery in Troy. Mrs. Pam Hall was the organist and she played "How Great Thou Art". Serving as casket bearers were: Austin CREECH, Charles CREECH, Harold CANNON, Dodson BLACKMORE, Orville HUTTON and Harold TURNBULL.
