A GOOD CITIZEN GONE

DIED- at his home in this city Tuesday night June 21, 1898, after a short illness of about three months, August KUHNE, aged 70 years, 4 months and 5 days. The death, which was due to quick consumption, occurred at 10 o'clock . Deceased was born in Westphalia, Prussia, Feb. 16, 1828, and came to America in 1848, settling in Warrenton. He was one of a large family of brothers and sisters, only two of whom now survive him, Henry KUHNE, of Wellsville, Mo., and Mrs. Jno. FREYHOFER, of Randolph, Kansas.

Deceased was married in 1853 to Miss Frederica NOLTING, of Warren county, a lady of splendid character. Her death occurred in this city Oct. 10, 1895. To this union were born fifteen children, eight of whom are now living and grown. Mr. KUHNE was raised in the Lutheran church, but upon settling in Warrenton transferred his membership to the Methodist church, in that place, and afterwards to the M. E. church, South, in Troy, upon his removal to this place in 1870. He was at all times a staunch supporter of his church.

In 1865 Mr. KUHNE engaged in the mercantile business in Warrenton, but, following the war, prices of all merchandise steadily went downward, and at forty years of age Mr. KUHNE found himself a ruined man wth heavy obligations. In the midst of his misfortunes he displayed the qualities that stamped him as a man of honor and integrity. He made no assignment but closed out his business and made a strong appeal to his creditors that he be allowed time, promising that he would finally meet his obligations, which at the time, amounted to about $5,000. His request was granted, and after years of hard struggle, Mr. KUHNE paid all indebtedness and had established a profitable business. This incident indicates the kind of man he was.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Thursday afternoon in the presence of many sympathizing friends, and the remains were interred in the Troy Cemetery. The following gentlemen acted as pall-bearers: G.W.MOHR, J.B.WILLIAMS, D.C.RUSSELL, W.A. and N.L.HALL.
