Obituary for Otis Douglas Holmes (1912-1915)
Uncited clippings from the "Mattie Davis Martin Collection" of Doris Martin Jablonski, 1998.

Once again the death angel has entered our little village and hovered over our home and left hanging low the cloud of mystery which has taken from our midst our darling babe, Otis Douglas, only child of Jasper and Grace HOLMES, being born July 30, 1912 and died Sept 10, 1915 being 3 years, l month and 10 years of age at the time of his death. He had been sick only one day with acute indigestion. It seems so sad in such a short time we should be called upon to give our little one up and it seems so hard to bear but we must try to understand that God’s way is best and that He doeth all things well and that for some good cause He has seen fit to remove from us our precious one in the blossom of life. No more will we hear the little footsteps no more will we see the little eager hands extended to come to us, but yet, if we could but see through the dark cloud, we would see his little arms extended saying "Papa and Mama come home to a higher and far better world where pain and tears are unknown. He passed away at the home of his grandmother. We know how hard it must have been to go back home for the first time and in entering therein to find no little one to greet them. A vacant place from room to room and hardest of all, a vacant place in the hearts that cannot be filled. But we trust that the God of all good will help and give them strength to bear their hardest trial. A scar has been left in their hearts that kind and loving words can not heal only One above with which there in nothing impossible.

The deceased leaves to mourn his untimely death a father, mother and two aged grandmothers, other relatives and a host of friends who sadly miss his departure. Remember the Lord says" I go to prepare a place for you and if it were no so, I would have told you. There is room for all and we can prepare ourselves to go to him in the upper and better world. We can truly say that he was the only pride and treasure of the home and of his disposition we can say he loved everyone he knew to know him was to love him. His funeral was conducted at the home of his grandmother by Rev. BARTINE. His little body was robed in white and placed in a white casket, interment was in the Hawk Point cemetery where by loving hands he was laid away to await the return of our Lord who will gather us unto Himself. The large crowd of sorrowing friends present and the beautiful floral offering that was given we are sure will tell more than words the esteem in which our baby boy was held. The pall bearers were William HAMMOND, Loyd DUNCAN, Beryl GALLAHER and Rossy PRESLEY all being friends of our little one.

May God give us strength to bear this terrible trial and we do pray God to give the heart broken parents and aged grandmothers strength and courage to bear their hardest trial.

AUNT BURNICE
