Obituary for George D. Heltzell (?-1981)

Funeral services for George D. Heltzell were held Wednesday,

October 21, 1981, at the Baue Funeral Home Chapel, St. Charles. 

Burial was at the Iberia Cemetery in this native Iberia, Mo.

Mr. Heltzell, 76, died Sunday, October 18, 1981, apparently

of a heart attack.

Mr. Heltzell, who lived in St Charles, was involved in education

in Missouri for 42 years.  Mr. Heltzell began as a teacher and high

school coach in Newburg.  He then became principal of Troy High

School and later superintendent of schools in Silex, Paris, Louisiana,

Clinton and Orchard Farms.

In 1957, he was named superintendent of the Missouri School for

the Blind in St. Louis.  “Teaching those young people was one of

my most gratifying experiences,” he once said, “A sightless student

knows he must learn and learn fast, and I never had the least bit of

trouble instructing them.”

He was affiliated with numerous educational organization and

associations during his career including service as president of

Missouri Association of School Administrators.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Halbruegge Heltzell; a daughter

Becky Washburn of Jefferson City,: a son G. Dallas Heltzell of

Longmont, Calif;  two sisters Mary Miller of Bowling Green, Mo.,

and Eska Fendorf, of St. Louis County, and two grandchildren.
