Obituary for Lucy Stuart Penn Harrell (1911-2002)

Mrs. Lucy Stuart PENN HARRELL of Troy passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2002. She had attained the age of 90 years, 11 months and nine days. Lucy was born on April 30, 1911, in Elsberry, Mo., to Sydney and Ethlyn (BROWN) PENN. She grew up in Lincoln County and attended the local schools along with her sisters, Georgia, Ann, Jean, Ruth and brother, Lloyd.

Following high school graduation, Lucy went to Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and also to the University of Missouri in Columbia. She began teaching elementary physical education to Troy R-III School students and also taught in the Kirkwood area.

Lucy met and later married Ernie Shelby HARRELL on July 25, 1941, at St. Stephen United Methodist Church in Troy. To this union were born three children, Jerry, Suzanne and Rosemary.

Lucy and Shelby enjoyed raising their family on the farm where wide-open spaces were desired. The family enjoyed collecting fossils and minerals on their many vacations. Lucy volunteered at the local swimming pool on cold Saturday mornings as an instructor.

Lucy and Shelby were instrumental with integrating mentally-challenged students and African American students into the Lincoln County R-III schools. They also kept books in the library that others wanted censored.

She had many good friends who belonged to the same organizations such as DAR, Retired Teachers Assoc. and Mark Twain Club.

Lucy Stuart PENN HARRELL is survived by her loving daughter, Suzanne and husband Gene CHRISTOPHER of St. Louis; granddaughters, Jennifer Ann and husband Darrin SHARP of St. Louis, Victoria Marie CHRISTOPHER of St. Louis and special great-grandson, Nicholas SHARP of St. Louis; two sisters, Jean BERNIER of St. Paul, Minn., Ruth and husband Joseph DANIELS of Quincy, Ill., nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was precede in death by her husband, Ernie Shelby HARRELL, an infant daughter, Rosemary HARRELL, son Jerry Shelby HARRELL; sisters, Georgia PENN and Ann PENN and brother, Dr. Lloyd PENN.

Memorial services were Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at the McCoy & Blossom Funeral Home, Troy, Mo. Officiating was Rev. David Stewart of St. Stephen United Methodist Church, Troy. Mrs. Pam Hall was the organist and accompanied Mrs. Heather Wehmeyer.

Interment followed in the Troy City Cemetery, Troy, Mo.
