Obituary Of An Old Citizen

Martha Malvina GROSHONG was born in the state of Ky., Jan. 17,1819. Died May 28,1912, age 93 years 4 months and 11 days. The deceased was taken to the state of Missouri by her parents during her infancy, and was located near of St. Louis where she grew up to womanhood and was married to Jefferson GROSHONG. To this union were born five sons and one daughter, one of the sons dying in infancy.

She is survived by the five remaining children, D.B. GROSHONG of Meriden, Sylvester and Monroe GROSHONG of California, James GROSHONG of the state of Oregon and Mrs.Ann MARTIN of Meriden, this state. Also by a great number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, together with a host of intimate friends to bless her memory.

She was the daughter of Elder Darius BAINBRIDGE, who was widely known in his day as a Baptist minister, but long since passed out into the Great Beyond. Her husband likewise passed away some 27 years ago, beside whom her remains are now laid to rest in Meriden Cemetery. She moved from St. Louis with her family to Wisconsin in an early day, when as yet that country was newly and sparcely inhabited, but later returned to Mo. not far from Smithville, and from thence came to the state of Kansas in the year of 1855. In the year of 1857 the family settled on a piece of land, which is presumed to have been wild and uncultivated at the time, situated some four or five miles NW of this place. She remained a number of years, reared her family of children, and laid the foundation for a comfortable independence in after years. Later, that farm was disposed of and with the other members of her family she settled near old Mt.Florence not far from the present site of Meriden. Here she lived until after the death of her husband some length of time, but more recently moved to the town of Meriden with her son D.B. GROSHONG, who cared for her, and with whom she lived after the death of her husband until the close of her long and useful life, dying at his home.....
