Obituary for Mrs. Cynthia M. Grandfield (1835-1915)
Uncited clipping.
From the papers of Mary Omahundro Hutt Walker

Mrs. Cynthia M. GRANDFIELD nee CASNER, was born in Brooks County W. Va., December 25, 1835, and died in Los Angeles, Cal., in the early morning of November 9, 1915, lacking seven weeks of being 80 years of age. She was married July 4, 1859, to Dennis M. GRANDFIELD: the husband preceeded his wife to the grave some twenty [sic], having passed away while still living in Troy where a great part of his life was spent as a minister of the gospel in the Christian Church.

To Mr.and Mrs. GRANDFIELD were born three children: Charles I. GRANDFIELD, of Washington D.C., and Mrs. Bird G. SHELTON and Mrs. Jessie G. BORDEN, of Los Angeles, Cal. Ten grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren also survive together with one brother, J. H. CASNER, of Troy, and one sister, Mrs. W. A. WOODSON of California. Mrs. GRANDFIELD spent much of her life in Troy and will be remembered by our older citizens as a most loving Christian lady, a loving mother and a helpful neighbor.

She has been residing with her children since the death of her husband and until recent years her health was good. Her remains were brought to Troy Saturday morning and the funeral was held in the Christian Church where she had served her Master so many years, in the presence of many friends. The funeral was preached by Rev. J. A. Stout, of Bowling Green, after which the interment took place at the city cemetery, by the side of her loved companion.

The writer knew Mrs. GRANDFIELD from his early boyhood and can testify to her beautiful life and character. She leaves her children the rich heritage of a gentle, sweet Christian woman, who lived the life of a humble follower of her Savior. May her memory long be cherished by those of us who knew and loved her.
