Robert Samuel Gilliland was born in Lincoln, Mo., August 15, 1846, and died at his home in this city Tuesday morning, April 1, 1913, at 3 o’clock, aged 66 years, 7 months and 15 days.  He was a son of Robert and Anna Gilliland, and was of a family of ten children, five sons and five daughters, all of whom have passed away except three sisters, Mrs. Matilda Holland of Liberal, Kansas; Mrs. Emiline Holly of Oregon and Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor of this place.

On September 13, 1871, Bro. Gilliland was married to Miss Anna Smith of St. Charles county, Mo., and for over 40 years they traveled the pathway of life together, sharing the deep sorrows as well as the jobs of life together.

A number of years ago Bro. Gilliland professed faith in Christ and was baptised into the fellowship of Fairview Baptist church, Lincoln county, Mo.  About twenty years ago he sold his farm near Olney and moved to Montgomery.  He then transferred is membership to the First Baptist church, Montgomery City, and continued a member of this church until the close of his life.

Bro. and Sister Gilliland were blessed with four daughters, three of whom preceded their father to the land beyond the dark river.  One, Miss Alva, survives him.

Mr. Gilliland was assessor of Lincoln county and held the office for two years, faithfully discharging his official duties, and at the time of his death he was city collector of Montgomery City.

He was a faithful member of the Masonic fraternity, a kind affectionate and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and an excellent citizen.

He meekly bore his trials and sore afflictions and when the end came calmly fell asleep.

He leaves a lonely wife and one daughter, a grandson, Gerald and a granddaughter, Lucile; three sisters many relatives and friends to lament his sudden departure.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, April 2, at 2:30 conducted by Rev. R. E. McQuie, in the presence of a large assembly of neighbors, friends and relatives, after which his body was laid to rest in the city cemetery.  The Masonic order, of whom he was an honored member, conducted the burial.

Contributor’s note: Surname is spelled Gilliland in the obituary but correct spelling should be Gililland.
