"Taps for Another Civil War Veteran"
J.H. Eversmeyer, Former County Judge, Died November 17, at Age of 87 Years

Jacob Henry EVERSMEYER, former member of the Warren County Court, and one of the few remaining Civil War Veterans of this section, died Thursday, November 17, at his home on College Heights at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 22 days. Mr. Eversmeyer enjoyed unusually good health for a man of his age until May, 1931, when he suffered a stroke, from which he rallied temporarily, but never recovered. Before that time he could be seen almost every day walking from his home to the postoffice and back, and observing his elastic step and upright carriage, no one would have suspected that he was more than eighty years old. For the last months he was confined to his home, and there was a fast dwindling of his physical powers.

The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the College M.E. Church, of which he was a member, in the presence of an audience that filled the edifice. Members of the Odd Fellows Lodge, with which he was affiliated, and members of the American Legion attended in a body. Dr. E.S. HAVIGHURST had charge of the service and in his sermon spoke of Judge Eversmeyer as a husband and father, a citizen and patriot, a public official, a member of the G.A.R., the Odd Fellows' Lodge and a member of the church, in all of which relations he gave a full measure of conscientious service. Miss Irene HETLAGE of Wright City and Mrs. Lafayett MASON of St. Louis each contributed a solo to the service, the former singing "One Sweetly Solemn Thought," and the latter "Face to Fact," with Mrs. Kathleen HALTER at the organ. Burial took place in the Wright City cemetery with military honors.

Jacob Henry EVERSMEYER was born in Lincoln county, near Wright City, September 25, 1845. As an orphan at the age of five years, he went to live with his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman H. SCHAPER. He remained with them until August, 1864, when he joined the Union Army and served about a year. He attended the Methodist Church and Sunday school and was converted at the age of eighteen.

Jan. 1, 1869, he was married to Caroline SCHOLEMAN, who died December 27, 1883. Six children were born of this union: Mary Elizabeth, who died at the age of three; Ida W. STRATHMAN, Wright City; Theo. W. EVERSMEYER, Wright City; Mary Leoda SCHMIDT, Kansas City; Leon H. EVERSMEYER, Troy; Anna E. OBERLAG, Trenton, Mo.

In 1885, January 15th, he was married to Caroline W. WINTER. The four children of this union are: Edna W. SCHUESSLER, Dallas, Texas; Estelle J. DESCHNER, Alva, Okla.; Walter H. EVERSMEYER, New Orleans, La., and Adienne E. JACOBY, Alton, Ill.

For a number of years Judge EVERSMEYER followed farming in Lincoln county, and being industrious and a good manager, the work of his hands prospered. Later he moved to Wright City and about ten years ago he and Mrs. EVERSMEYER came to Warrenton and have been numbered among our most respected citizens since. In 1902 he was elected Associate Judge of the Warren County Court and was re-elected in 1904. In this capacity his sound business judgement stood him in good stead and he served his county faithfully and well. His passing marks the closing of a life rich in years and usefulness.
