Obituary for Thomas LaFayette Elmore

Thomas LaFayette ELMORE was born in North Carolina, March 16, 1837. In the fall of the
same year his parents came to Cole county, Mo., where they lived one year. From there they
moved to a farm on Coon creek, Lincoln county, at which place after the death of the
father, (John A. ELMORE) some member of the family, with the exception of one or two short
intervals, for more than 70 years has lived. It was at this "old homestead" that
the subject of this sketch passed away May 6, 1909, after an illness of some six weeks.
On March 6, 1859, he was married to Miss Mary E. ROPER.
Of this union eleven children were born, six of whom are living: William of Bonham, Texas,
Daniel of Colorado Springs, Mrs. George BARLEY, Jeff, Pringle
and Ida of the neighborhood of their parents. Besides these he is mourned by a brother
(H.K.) of Wellsville, Mo., also a brother and sister in Bates county, Mo.
Mr. ELMORE was a good citizen. He was a man of few words but of careful, upright, honest
deeds. His one ambition in life was to do right, treating others as he would be treated
and by honest industry support himself and his. Many friends and acquaintances know how
well he succeeded. As to his personal conviction in the matter of religion the writer is
unable to state, as he gave no public expression. However, conscious of his approaching
end he spoke to his wife and children in glad anticipation of meeting loved ones gone over
and how we all sincerely hope for him the fruition of his hope.
The funeral was from the home on the morning of May 7. A large number of relatives and
friends gathered there. Songs of Christian sentiment were sung. Sympathies were stirred
and in many case expressed. The writer tried to speak a few words from the Book. Thank
Heaven, for a death and burial in a Christian land! The body was planted by the side of
children in the Kennedy graveyard.
To those of us left who must go the way each for himself, shall we not seek the Way? May
