Obituary for Mary E. (Roper) Elmore  (1841-1926)
Uncited clippings from the "Mattie Davis Martin Collection" of Doris Martin Jablonski, 1998.

OBITUARY:  Mary E. Roper ELMORE was born May 9, 1841 and died November 11, 1926, at the ripe old age of 85 years, 6 months, and 2 days. She was a daughter of William H. ROPER and wife. She was left an orphan at the age of 9 years. She grew up to young womanhood in the home of the late Silas and wife (Mary Mildred ROPER), of the Linn's Mill vicinity, and was married to Thomas ELMORE, March 6, 1859. To this union 11 children - six boys: William, Daniel, Doc, Lank, Jefferson and Pringle and five daughters, Alice, Fannie, Sarah, Dazarine and Ida -- were born. All grew up to manhood and womanhood, except Sarah, who died when at the age of 11 years. She lived to see all of these children except two sons, Jefferson, of Winfield and David of Texas, laid away to their last resting place. Her husband Thomas L. ELMORE departed this life June 8, 1910, and she was left to a widow's lonely life these years. She and husband not only reared these 11 children but reared two orphan grandsons, Tolbert and James McFADEN.

Her whole life was spend in Lincoln County. Her remains were brought here from Winfield Sunday and were taken to the Baptist church where the funeral services were conducted by Bro. O. A. GORDON, who had known here ever since he could remember, to a large gathering of relatives, friends and neighbors.

Aunt Mary E. ELMORE joined the Baptist church of Troy many years ago and she lived faithful to its teachings and she loved and trusted her God and always expressed her faith. He would take care of her in her widowhood loneliness. After the funeral services, her remains were taken to the Hawk Point cemetery and laid to rest by the side of the husband and children gone before.
