Obituary for Ann Duff
From the family archives of Russell M. Reid, Louisville, KY, 1998.

Died, on the 21st of June, 1855, Miss Ann Duff, in the __ year of her age.

She connected herself with the A. R. [Associate Reformed Presbyterian] Church at Mt. Zion, Mo., some ten or eleven years ago, and continued in that connection until the day of her death. She was a shining ornament-- modest, prudent, silent, and devoutly pious. Her's was that charity which "thinketh on evil" -- her most intimate acquaintances witness that they never heard her speak of the faults of others. Her intercourse was tender and affectionate as that of a sister. Her benevolence was savory in the home circle; and it was expansive in the hearty espousal of the Church enterprises, her donations being always prompt and liberal. Liberal in life, she was liberal in death, as is now testified by her "last Will and Testament." To the congregation of Mt. Zion she bequeathed a "pulpit Bible," to be selected by the pastor. She also bequeaths one-fourth of her estate to four benevolent institutions, making them equal or giving one-eighth of her efforts. The institutions thus favored, were, if we remember right, the Bible Society, Foreign and Domestic Missions of the Southern Synod, and the Damascus Mission of the A. R. Church North. Her last illness was long and exceedingly painful. A complication of diseases had fixed upon her frame, and everyone was in itself a monster. Neuralgia, Consumption, and a Cancer. Universalists may speculate about the equal distribution of rewards and punishments in this life. But a case like this compared with many wicked, who "have no bands in their death," confutes that unscriptural delusion. For eighteen months were her faith, patience, and Christian magnanimity exposed to a fearful ordeal, but only that they might be perfected and manifested.

The deceased was sister to Rev. Jackson Duff, of Ohio, and she had many other friends in the Western States.

Contributor's Note:  Ann Duff was born on July 16, 1806 to William Duff, Sr. and Sally Wallace. In addition to the brother, Rev. Jackson Duff mentioned above, she had brother Hamilton Duff and William Duff, Jr. (married to Minerva Wallace) and sisters Hanna Duff (married to Mr. R. Ross) and Elizabeth Duff (married to Hon. Alexander Reid, Jr.). Ann was buried next to her sister Elizabeth Duff Reid in the Reid Cemetery near Okete in Lincoln County, Missouri.
