Heart Attack Is Fatal to Gabriel W. Damron

News of the death of G. W. Damron, who had been ill but one day, brought sadness to many last Wednesday.  He was seized with a heart attack the previous day and his sons, who live in St. Louis, were called and came immediately to make arrangements to take him to the hospital but soon realized that life was ebbing and decided to forego hospital arrangements.  The remains were taken to Miller’s Funeral Home to lie in state until 2: 30 p.m. Friday, October 11, when funeral services were conducted by Rev. Marvin Fortel at Elsberry Christian church, service in charge of Masonic Lodge.  Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Gabriel Walter Damron, son of John and Melzenia Thompson Damron, was born September 14, 1862, in Pike county, near Damron, and died October 8, 1947, at his home in Elsberry.

On August 17, 1884, he was united in marriage with Laura Frances Mulherin.  Of this union two sons were born, John H. and Roy Lee, of St. Louis.  Besides his two sons he is survived by two daughters-in-laws, one grandson, John Walter Damron of New Jersey, and two granddaughters, Mrs. Dorothy Sterl, of Mason City, Iowa, and Mrs. Beatrice Stobtz, of St. Louis, two great-grandsons two brothers, two sisters and several nephews and nieces.

He lived a long life of usefulness.  In 1893 he became associated with the St. Louis Suburban Railway Co. where he worked until 1904 transferring to the Suburban Railway company, East St. Louis, Illinois, to stay until 1910 when he moved to his farm near Elsberry.  In 1914 he assumed management of the Craig farms, east of town, and 18 years later, “Uncle Gabie” and “Aunt Fannie”, as the couple was affectionately known established residence in Elsberry and he conducted a grist mill until ill health forced his retirement.

About three years ago his companion of three-score years became an invalid and with his constant care of her their companionship grew dearer.  She passed away five months ago and while his loved one made every effort to fill his life the loss of her was more than his 85 years could stand.

He was a good Christian man, a member of the Elsberry Associate Reformed Presbyterian church and a member of the Masonic Lodge.  He will live on in the memory of those……….(rest of obituary missing)
