DEATH COMES SUDDENLY TO WALTER ADDISON COX

----------------------------------

As briefly noted in these columns last week, Walter A. COX, of near New Hope, was claimed by death Saturday morning, August 26, immediately after having entered the kitchen of the family home, apparently having succumbed to a heart attack. Mrs. COX, who entered the house only a few minutes after he had gone in, discovered the body and after vainly trying to restore consciousness to the stricken man, she walked across fields to New Hope to summon help.

The body was removed to BRADLEY’S and lay in state at the Fourth street Funeral Home until the hour of the funeral, which was held in New Hope Baptist church Tuesday afternoon, August 29, the Rev. L. H. LYNN, of Winfield, Officiating. Interment followed in New Hope cemetery.

Walter Addison COX, son of Thomas and Rebecca BARNES COX, was born in Lincoln County, Missouri, May 3, 1886, the fifth son of a family of nine children. He died August 26, 1944, at the age of 58 years, 3 months, 23 days. He was united in marriage April 4, 1908, with Lillian PHOEBUS, by whom he is survived. Six children were born to this union: Eva, now Mrs. Don EASTIN, of Elsberry; Odessa, now Mrs. John Henry PALMER, of St. Louis; Russell F., of Camp Ellis, ILL.; Wilson W., of Phoenix, Arizona; Effie, now Mrs. Tiny HILTON, of Wichita, Kansas, and Marion Glenn, of the home. There are two grandchildren, Buddy PALMER and Ronnie Ray HILTON.

He also leaves to mourn his passing three brothers and three sisters; Otis H. COX, of Louisiana; Thomas L. COX, St. Charles; O. B. COX, Mrs. Nelson FIGART and Mrs. Arlie STEPHENS, Los Angeles, Calif., and Miss Nell COX, of Louisiana. Two brothers, John and William COX, preceded him in death.

Mr. COX was a kind and loving husband and father. His ever cheerful disposition won him friends wherever he went, and the high esteem in which he was held was evidenced by the presence at funeral services of an assemblage which taxed the seating capacity of the church building. He had been a member of the Smith Chapel Methodist church since 1910.
