Obituary for Sallie Fisher Cortelyou (b. 1884)
Uncited clippings from the "Mattie Davis Martin Collection" of Doris Martin Jablonski, 1998.

Sallie Fisher CORTELYOU daughter of Lee H. And Nettie Taylor FISHER, was born near Troy, Mo., January 27, 1884. After finishing her studies in grammar school at Troy, she attended one year at Buchanan College, Troy, and also a year at Central Wesleyan College at Warrenton. She then became one of Lincoln county’s teachers for five consecutive terms.

In April 1906, she was married to Garrie S.CORTELYOU, of Troy and to this union five children were born, viz: Rosetta, Abraham Lee, Mildred, Barcley Taylor and Garrie Simonson, Jr.  Mrs. CORTELYOU united with the Presbyterian church at Troy during the ministry of Rev. LATHAM, at the age of 14, and her life thereafter in its personal devotions and also in the rearing of her family, was consistent with its early decision upon the claims of her Savior. As it seems to this writer, Mrs. Cortelyou possessed a rare combination of character-qualities. Controlled by an ambition of remarkable degree this was balanced by the beautiful graces of patience and gentleness -- exceedingly busy under exceptional self-control.  Then too having an almost consuming care for her own household she was kindly and obligingly unselfish towards others.

Mrs. CORTELYOU died at the Missouri Baptist Sanitarium in St. Louis Sunday, Nov. 14, as a result of injuries received on Friday before while carrying the mail on Route No. 4 out of Troy, the horse she was driving became unmanageable and throwing her from the rig.

Funeral services were at the Presbyterian Church, Troy, Tuesday, November 16 at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. W. V. WATSON, pastor, assisted by the writer.  Rarely does so large a number assemble for a funeral service in Troy as was present, due doubtless to her capable and faithful service to the public, the tragic manner of her taking away and the unfeigned sympathy felt for her family.

She is survived by her husband, five children, father and mother, one brother, many other relatives and a host of friends. The body rests in the city cemetery under a mound that was literally covered with flowers -- tokens of love and esteem.

May our God bestow the consolations of His grace.
