Death of Rev. S. J. COPHER
The news of the sudden death of this good man came as a great shock to his many friends in
Lincoln county. Mr. COPHER was holding a protracted meeting at Hickory Grove church in
Boone county and on Friday evening, August 27, was preparing to go to the evening service.
He was stricken by apoplexy and died at 7:30 o’clock, about 15 minutes after the
attack began. The remains were brought to Troy Monday morning, accompanied by his widow
and several friends from his home in Moberly, the funeral was preached in the Christian
church in the presence of a large gathering of friends from Hawk Point, Davis and from the
community of Troy, attesting the great love his friends felt for him. The remains were
interred in the Troy cemetery.
STONEWALL JACKSON COPHER was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. COPHER and was born near Hawk
Point May 6, 1864. He was educated in the public schools and at Troy academy. When he
decided to enter the ministry of the Christian church, he went to Lexington, Ky., and
entered the Bible college, from where he was graduated in 1887. He was married in Kentucky
the same year to Miss Sallie BARR. They returned to Missouri that year and he began to
work as a minister in his native county. It was a privilege to say that he never had a
vacant Sunday and that he missed only one appointment because of bad weather and only two
on account of illness. He held 26 annual protracted meetings at the Christian church in
Davis, a record not equaled, perhaps, by any Missouri preacher.
Mr. and Mrs. COPHER had no children of their own, but they sheltered in their home, from
time to time, 22 orphans, giving them tender care and love so long as their necessities
required. This eloquently tells of his unselfishness and devotion to the cause of
humanity.
The writer knew the subject of this notice more than 30 years. It is a pleasure to us to
testify to his many admirable qualities and especially to his earnestness in service of
the Master whom he loved. His was a busy life and a happy disposition that shed joy
everywhere he went. He will long be missed from among his friends and his memory will be
treasured most by those who knew and appreciated him best.
