AN AGED WOMAN PASSES AWAY

Elsberry Pioneer Expires at Ripe Old Age of 85 Years

The death of Mrs. Jane BROTHER, which had been hourly expected for many days, occurred last Friday evening about half after seven o'clock, death coming as welcome relief to the tired body of the venerable woman. Mrs. BROTHER was stricken with partial paralysis on her eighty-fifth birthday anniversary, and  owing to her advanced years hope of her recovery was never entertained.  During her long illness she was faithfully attended by her sons and daughters, one of the latter, Mrs. T. R. GOODMAN, of Texhoma, Okla., having been summoned in the beginning of her mother's illness and remaining throughout the long ordeal. Mrs. GOODMAN left for home the morning following her mother's funeral, to be at the bedside of her beloved granddaughter, little Jennie HAMILTON, who had been reported very ill, and who passed away Monday night while Mrs. GOODMAN was still nearly a day's journey from home.  And so within the space of three days, the oldest and the youngest members of this family were claimed by death.

Sarah Jane SITTON, daughter of J. W. and Polly BUCHANAN SITTON, was born on the old SITTON homestead about three miles west of Elsberry, on December 3, 1836. She was one of nine children, the only two now living being Mrs. T. V. FARMER of this city, and W. V. SITTON, of Blackwell, Okla. In 1860 she was married to A. A. BROTHER. They made their home in Louisiana until 1879, when they moved to Elsberry and spent the remainder of their lives here, Mr. BROTHER dying in 1907.

Mrs. BROTHER was the mother of nine children, of whom three, twin daughters and a son, died in early childhood. Those who are left to cherish the memory of the departed are: Mrs. T. R. GOODMAN, of Texhoma, Okla., Mrs. Hallie TEMPLE, J. A. and A. D. BROTHER, who resided with their mother, and Mrs. B. D. ELSBERRY and E. E. BROTHER, of this city. There are also five grandchildren: Mrs. G. A. HAMILTON, of Texhoma, Okla., Doran BROTHER of Chicago, Mrs. Curtis TAYLOR, William and Miss Martha Lee TEMPLE, of this city. Ozbert HAMILTON, of Texhoma, Okla., is now the only surviving great-grandchild.

Mrs. BROTHER died May 5, at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 2 days. She had for many years been a member of the Baptist church, having transferred her membership from Louisiana to the Elsberry church upon leaving the former city. For several years she had been unable to leave home except as she was wheeled in her invalid chair, but until her last illness she was remarkably active mentally, spending much of the time reading and being exceptionally well posted upon the news of the day. She looked forward to the visits of  her children who lived near enough to see her almost every day and enjoyed discussing with them the topics she had read.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the family residence on North Third Street, Rev. F. J. YOKLEY, pastor of the Christian church, officiating, assisted by Rev. K. E. MAGRUDER of the Baptist church, and Rev. J. L. GRIER of the A. R. Presbyterian church. A large assemblage of friends, relatives and neighbors were present at the house and accompanied the family to the city cemetery, where interment took place. A profusion of beautiful floral pieces bespoke the esteem in which Mrs. BROTHER was held, as well as of the sympathy of friends for the family in their bereavement.
