Obituary for Anna Eliza Birkhead (1863-1940)

ANNA ELIZA BIRKHEAD

Anna Eliza BIRKHEAD, second child and only daughter of Mary Henry SPICER and Emmanuel Bailey BIRKHEAD, known as (Uncle Dock), was born July 20, 1863 and passed away Wednesday at 5:30 o’clock on February 28, 1940 at the home of her youngest daughter, Mrs. Warren SITTON in St. Charles, Mo., at the age of 76 years, 7 months and 8 days.

Her entire life was spent about 3 miles west of Winfield, Mo. She was married June 4, 1884 to Everett Wise DORSEY. To this union were born 6 daughters, Mary (Mrs. Ernest MILLER) of Winfield; Clara (Mrs. John HILLIGOSS), Esther (Mrs. Everett HUDSON) of St. Louis and Alta (Mrs. Warren SITTON) of St. Charles. Osie and Lucy, dying very young. She had eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter. She had seven brothers. Three preceded her in death Alva, Frank and Link. Dan, Elmer, Clint and Clarence survive.

She was very devoted to her loved ones and always thought of their welfare and sacrificed for them at all times. She united with New Salem Baptist Church in young womanhood and lived a faithful Christian life until death. She was always interested in her church and pastor and gave of her means to their support.

Her husband preceded her in death 18 years ago, having departed this life suddenly.

Mrs. DORSEY was courageous, fought life’s battles bravely, having an abiding faith in God to sustain her in her lonely widowhood. She was held in high esteem by all who knew her.

Besides her immediate family, she leaves brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and host of relatives and friends and will be sadly missed by all.

The funeral services were held at New Salem, Friday, March 1, 1940 by Rev. L. H. LYNN (her pastor), assisted by Revs. Wm. CALLAWAY and O. A. GORDON. Burial was in New Salem Cemetery beside her husband.
