Dr. F. Gilbert BICKEL II, a retired dentist, died Wednesday (July 22, 1992) at Delmar Gardens Nursing Center in Chesterfield after a brief illness. He was 85.

Dr. BICKEL, of Ladue, was a pioneer in outpatient oral surgery, both as an anesthesiologist and as an oral surgeon..

He practiced for 53 years at 8938 St. Charles Rock Road in St. John and was on the dental surgical staff of Lutheran Medical Center in St. Louis and St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur. He retired in 1984.

He was active in the St. Louis chapter of the American Dental Society and was a past president of the Missouri chapter of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.

Dr. BICKEL was involved in the St. Louis Institute of Music and servied as a board member for many years of the St. Louis Conservatory and Schools for the Arts. He also served on the board of St. John’s Bank and Trust Co.

He was an elder and trustee at Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church and an honorary life member and past treasurer of the Bridlespur Hunt, a group that raises money for charity.

Dr. BICKEL was born in Lincoln County, Mo. He earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Louis University and his degree in dentistry from Washington University Dental School.

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Ladue Chapel, 9450 Clayton Road, Ladue. Burial will be private.

Among the survivors are his wife, Mary WELCH BICKEL of Ladue; a daughter, Dr. Wanda BICKEL of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a son, F. Gilbert BICKEL III of west St. Louis County; two brothers, Ira BICKEL and Melvin BICKEL, both of Lincoln County.
