FUNERAL RITES FOR SHIRLEY BARNES HELD MONDAY 

Funeral services for Shirley Irene Barnes, 16, daughter of Mrs. Pauline and the late Everett Barnes, who died in the St. Joseph hospital in St. Charles at 8:55 p.m. Friday, October 28, was held from the Old Alexandria church at 2:30 p.m.  Monday, October 31.   Interment was in Old Alexandria cemetery.   The services were conducted by the Rev. W. E. Flatbush assisted by Rev. Edwin Winchell.  She was born near Elsberry on January 2, 1939. 

Shirley had been seriously ill for about three weeks.  Although she had not been feeling well for sometime she had been able to attend her school duties as a senior in the Elsberry high school “War Whoop.” Her condition grew steadily worse until she was forced to discontinue her classes and was finally taken to the hospital, where she passed away. 

Shirley’s father, Everett Barnes, died in 1953.  She is survived by her mother, two sisters, Doris (Mrs. Derwood) Gibson of Troy and Hazel (Mrs. Charles) McKay of Clifton Hill, Mo.; a grandmother, Mrs. Belle Barnes of Troy, four nephews, eight aunts and three uncles. 

Shirley was a member of the New Hope Baptist church.  She was a lovely young lady, a favorite among her many school friends, and all who knew her.  The entire community has been saddened by her passing.  The services were in charge of Ricks Funeral Home.
