From the papers of Mary Omahundro Hutt Walker

DR. CHAS DEMETRIUS AVERY was born January 8, 1857 in Lincoln County, Missouri, and died at his home in Troy, Mo. on March 13, 1946, over 89 years of active life. He was the son of Samuel W. and Martha SHEETS AVERY and grew up on a farm near Troy, attending the rural school and the State University. After teaching school in his native county he graduated in medicine at the Old Missouri Medical College, now Washington University and came to Troy for the practice of his profession which he followed nearly half a century.

Dr. and Miss Elizabeth BLACKMORE were married on March 19, 1884 and spent all their married life in Troy. He was preceeded in death by his wife about ten years and is now survived by two sons, Col. Sam AVERY of the Army Medical Center, Washington D. C. and Dr. Walter T. AVERY, dentist of Troy, together with three grandsons and one great-granddaughter. The only member of the large family remaining is Mrs. Sallie WORSHAM of Troy, age 81.

Dr. AVERY was an ambitous man, full of energy, determination and presistance, often exemplified especially in the summer, before his graduation, which he spent making cross-ties in the timber of his native county for the purpose of developing the rugged constitution on which stood him in so well during the many years he spent in saddle, day and night, going through mud, snow, sleet, and storm, whatever came his way, swimming swollen streams before bridges came, that he might minister to the needs of the people of his region. Very few families in these parts but knew the familiar laugh of Dr. AVERY, his way of encouragement.

Dr. AVERY attended the Methodist church of which he was a member from early life, supporting that and every good cause of which he was aware, though in the last few years, because of deafness, he was deprived of the pleasure of his church services. The final service at his home was in keeping with his frequent request, simple but impressive, with scripture and prayer by Rev. O. A. Gordon and brief comment on the same reading by Rev. J. Preston Cole, his pastor.
