Stout Fort Cemetery

Located in Lincoln Co., MO -- go north of Troy on H-61 to H-E. Turn left on E going 

west about 1/4 mi. to the first gravel road on the left -- Auburn Jct.  Turn left 

going south about 1/2 mi. to creek crossing (Fort Branch). Small abandoned house on 

left side of road, turn into driveway at right side you start up the hill.  Small 

white block house (abandoned) where you turn in and park.  Walk straight west up 

driveway to a fence, keeping the bluff and creek to your right. 

At this point sat STOUT'S FORT, overlooking the creek.  Cross the fence and walk about 

100 yards into the woods, bearing to your left about 45 degrees.

     Believe this to be one of the oldest cemeteries in existence in Lincoln Co.  

Stout's Fort  was built during the War of 1812 to ward off Indian attacks from the Sac 

and Fox Indians, led by the famous chief Black Hawk. (See History of Lincoln Co. MO 

page 218, Goodspeed Publishing Co. 1888.) Many skirmishes were fought in this area with 

some loss of life.

     After much searching and probing on our part we located 17 stones that were in 

3 rows.  Many of the stones were buried or covered with a heavy layer of leaves and brush.  

All of these stones were creek stone.  Some scratches and markings on stones, all illegible.

           Row 3 - seven stones



Across another fence by row three, there are three graves with tombstones and footstones.

2 -- corner of stone broken off.

     - GALLOWAY b 13 July 1824 d 5 Sep 1827



3 -- ELIZABETH GALLOWAY was born June 1818

                            died August 1819
