Letter to Stephen Hilton from a niece during the Civil War

(Copied from a letter writen by a niece to my great-grandfather Stephen Hilton who md. Zeorilda Overall. J G ). Histoy of American People by J.H.Shimm on page 356 says that Morgan's Raid was 1868 & attempted to cross into Ky. near Pomeroy Sycamore College or Cottage 1863 (LHH)

My dear Uncle,

We was more than overjoyed to hear from you once more. I thought the rebels had made you take up arms or the federals had gobled you up. We didn't know what had become of you. Marie says if you was not dead you ort to be killed but I can't agree with hur there. You know I can't spare you yet awhile. I guess she only said that from the lid out. It didn't come from hur hart, do you think it did? I am in my room and it is after ten o'clock. I don't know what Ma will write to you so I will write what I want to now. I have no good news to tell you, but some very sad, You rememeber that solgar (soldier) boy that called to see me while you was home Sapton BARROUGH (letter is faded could be T.or F. j.g.) is dead. He was woniened (wounded) on the night of April 1 and died on the night of the second of July, his remains has not come home yet, his brother has gone for him, his poor mother is nearly crazy. I feel so sorry for hur I don't know what to do. It is very sad for us to lose those we love best and it is so in hur case, he was hur faverat of hur two sons, he was a a very clearer (could be clever) man, everyone like him so much, he leaves a great many friends.

John MORGON has bin in our part of the country but he did not have time to pay us a visit. The Hoosers boys made him travel so fast he had no time and the Ohioans are as bad on him, they had gobled him up or nearly all of his men. Before MORGAN left Indiana, he pade Uncle Rawlings a visit and took all his corn and 1 horse but that serves him rite, he is considuble on the Intermute" order. There was three steamboats lode come down to Louisville and I guess that cousin what spoke of is with them if he is not dead or ort to be, I did not think eny body that kind ( perhaps kin) to me would turn out to horse steeling as I believe that Morgon principles.

This is for mother Ma says she saw your sweetum the other day and she is a nice as ever and is waiting with patience for your coming. You promised Ma to write Marie and she asked hur if she had gotten a letter from you and of course she had not recieved a crack of a pen. Ma says she is going to Louisville,( this would be Ky . j.g.) soon. She had gotten some incragraments and I expect she will have you married by proxy if you don't come soon. You must try and come by September, we want to see you so much, Uncle, don't forget my buckskin for my gloves you promised me when you come. I expect that will be my part of your estate. Pa says he will be very glad to see you in September, we can't wate eny longer than that, be sure and come.

Alow me to subcribe myself your nice (niece) Ann ( or Sin maybe Cin ) Sue Applegate.

(Lucinda " CIN "is the dau. of Lucretia HILTON (1st child of Daniel & Elizabeth SIEBERT HILTON ) who was b. 1805 or 06 in Ky., md. Jan. 19, 1829 to Charles APPLEGATE in Clark Co. Indiana. I believe they remained in Ky. but other members of the family came to Lincoln Co. Mo. early 1800s.
