Lincoln County Produces Tons Litters (1925)
No. 245 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

Philip MUDD, of the Millwood community, and John MUENSTERMAN, of the Troy community, who have been veteran producers of pork for the last 35 years are the first to report for 1925 the production of more than one ton of pork from one litter in 180 days.

Mr. MUDD's hogs were born February 23, 1925 and weighed 2360 pounds August 20, which will give them an official weight of more than 2400 pounds when 6 months old. There were 11 pigs in the litter and this is a very high mark for a gilt's litter.

Mr. MUDD kept a mixture of middlings, 2 parts tankage, 1 part corn free choice before the pigs at all times after they were two weeks old.

This litter consumed $147.90 worth of corn, $37.10 worth of middlings and $16.60 worth of tankage during the feeding period.
Plenty of well water, grass and shade were provided for the litter.

Mr. MUENSTERMAN's pigs were born March 11 and on September 7 weighed 2600 pounds lacking 4 days of being 6 months old which will give them an official weight of more than 2650 pounds.

These pigs received middlings, corn tankage, alfalfa and skim milk. In recent tests 100 pounds of skim milk is equal to 28 pounds of shelled corn for the production of pork, and Mr. MUENSTERMAN believes it is one of the best feeds to feed to hogs to produce rapid gains. These men believe more profit can be made from hogs that are pushed to an early fall market than by some other method requiring boarding the pigs 2 or 3 months longer. The remarkable gains made on these litters were not only due to the feeding of an excellent ration at the beginning of the feeding period, but the protein feeds were continued through the fattening period, however the pigs did not increase in the consumption of tankage and middlings after they were three and one half months old. The use of lots comparatively free from round worms and much to do with the god [sic] gains made and the uniformity of litters. Both these gentlemen will be awarded medals by the Missouri Breeder's Association.
