Notice of Mr. Chas. W. Meyer (March 11, 1899)
No. 244b - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

Chas. W. MEYER, to use his own language, "owes his present existence to the following conditional circumstances." His father, Geo. W. Louis MEYER, was born Oct. 16, 1835, in St. Charles County, Mo., in the Femme Osage district, on a farm that his father, Chas. F. MEYER, settled, Daniel BOONE being his nearest neighbor. His mother, Miss Charlotte WERGES, was born in Melle, Germany, May 5, 1841; at the age of two years she moved with her father and family to this country and settled on a farm in Darsts Bottom in St. Charles county. His parents were married August 6, 1862, and resided on the old farm at Femme Osage until November 18, 1871, when they moved to the old Joel BLANKS place in this county where they still reside. To them were born two children, Chas. W., born June 1, 1863, and Johanna L., born December 6, 1864. Johanna L. married Dr. D. A. DYER and resided in St. Louis. Chas. W. always lived with his parents, enjoying as he says, "single cussidness and the most modest but honorable occupation of a farmer." For the last twelve years, in connection with the farm, he has run a saw mill; has also run for office, "not for congress," but for justice of the peace, and was elected by a flattering vote. He is now dispensing justice in Clark township whenever it becomes necessary. He was a candidate for county clerk in 1896 against W.A. JACKSON, E.R. WILLIAMSON and W.W. WATTS; although he was first to fall in the fight, he came out with the best home vote cast for any candidate and a clean record. He has served a number of terms on the Democratic Central Committee and is now a member of it; was a member when the county sent delegates to the Pertle Springs convention, being chosen as delegate; was also a delegate to the Sedalia convention, where he says he broke out with the "Free Silver Measles;" was also a delegate to the Kansas City nominating convention in 1900. He is a member of Moscow Lodge, No. 558, A.F. & A.M., Troy Royal Arch Chapter, No. 86, member of Eastern Star, Chapter member of C.T.H. & F.C., also honorary member of the Grand Oriental order 1001. He says "he is a member of no church but a friend to them all, that no doubt he is guilty of many transgressions, but, never scratched a Democratic ticket and will continue to vote the same and "till the soil by divine permission and await the coming of a better day."

Charlie never attended any but district public schools, but is a man of more than average intelligence. He has a host of friends and is respected by all who know him. It is said, "to know a man you must live with or have dealings with him." We have never had occasion to "bump" very close to Charlie, but taking a long distance shot at him we are constrained to believe that he will do to tie to, and you can most always get a man's size if the proper sight is taken. To know him is to like him, to be with him is to feel that all the good people are not dead yet, and that after all, life is worth living. If he ever seek political preferment at the hands of the people of Lincoln conty again and enters the race for office, no matter how warm the company that scores up to the pole with him, in the finish, win or lose, they will know they have had a race. Mr. MEYER has recently informed us that he would be a candidate for County Clerk, subject to the Democratic Primary in 1902.
