Dr. and Mrs. Ray BUSENBARK Plan Move to California; Prominent MD Has Been
Teacher, Pastor, Chautauqua Leader
Dr. Ray BUSENBARK has had many varied experiences in his life. He has taught school, been
a pastor, superintendent of a Chautauqua, and in 1939 he began practicing medicine here.
Doctor BUSENBARK taught science at the old Central high school, later called Wyandotte
high school, Ninth and Minnesota, as well as pre-medical and other science topics at the
junior college here from 1921 to 1935.
Then Doctor BUSENBARK decided that he, too, would like to study medicine, and he entered
the University of Kansas medical school where he received his degree in 1937. He served
his internship at Bethany hospital in 1937 and 1938.
Incidentally, Doctor BUSENBARK was 48 years old when he received his degree in medicine.
Now 65 years old, the Kansas City Kansas physician and surgeon has decided to retire and
move to California.
To Practice There
Doctor BUSENBARK announced yesterday that he is quitting his practice here and will leave
for Long Beach, about December 1. Then after a vacation he plans to resume practice there
in a few months. The local physician said the business office at his office in the
Brotherhood building will be open until Sunday.
Doctor BUSENBARK was born on a farm near Robinson, Kan., and farming was his first work
experience. He entered Cornell college at Mount Vernon, Iowa, and he served Methodist
pastorates in neighboring towns while in school.
Following graduation in 1916, Doctor BUSENBARK served Methodist pastorates in Solon,
Bassett, and Manchester - three communities in Iowa. In 1919 he went to Fredonia, Kan.,
where he was principal of the high school from 1919 to 1921.
During the summers at Fredonia, Doctor BUSENBARK was a superintendent for the
Redpath-Horner Chautauqua. Then there was the long stint of teaching in Kansas City,
Kansas followed by his medical career here. In addition to his regular practice, Doctor
BUSENBARK was plant physician for Armour & Co., here from 1938 to 1943.
Why did Doctor BUSENBARK enter so many occupations?
"A person needs a broad basis of education in order to take advantage of all
opportunities that come along," he said yesterday. "I don't believe in early
specialization. If you are equipped in several fields you can take advantage of any
opportunites that come up."
Doctor BUSENBARK noted that there is great delight in knowing about and working in varied
fields and he encouraged others to do the same.
The doctor and his wife live at 3040 Washington avenue. Their daughter, Mrs. Beverly Jean
SLAWSON, lives at Lakewook Village, Calif., which is near Long Beach.
Among organizations of which Doctor BUSENBARK is a member are the Wyandotte County Medical
society, Wyandotte Academy of General Practice, Kansas State Medical association, American
Medical Association, American Association of Railway Physicians and the High Twelve club.
He is a member of the Washington Avenue Methodist Church.

Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection": Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO. She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
