Obituary for Susannah Catherine Shelton (1829-1912)
No. 130 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

The many friends of Mrs. Susan C. SHELTON, widow of the late Peachy G. SHELTON, were shocked and grieved upon learning of her death, which occurred Tuesday morning about 3 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. H. HAMMOND in St. Louis where she had been visiting since September 29. Mrs. SHELTON left Troy in apparently good health, considering her advanced age, and was only taken sick Monday morning. Her daughter, Mrs. Charles MARTIN and son Robert were immediately sent for. Kind and loving hands did all that was possible to stay the hand of death but to no avail, uraemic poisoning having ravished her system beyond medical aid. Mrs. SHELTON, had she lived until Nov. 2, would have been 83 years of age, and survived her lamented husband less than one month. The remains were brought up from St. Louis Tuesday afternoon and taken to the home of her only daughter, Mrs. Chas. MARTIN, from which place funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, by her former pastor, Rev. W.J. PATRICK of Bowling Green. The remains were interred in the Troy cemetery by the side of her husband. Our sympathy is extended those who are left to mourn the demise of this good Christian servant of the Lord.  We will endeavor to obtain an appropriate obituary for our next issue.

Mr. Meacon A. SHELTON and wife, who was Mrs. Anna BERGER, with their family arrived in Missouri from Pittsylvania county, Virginia, November 2, 1834. He settled in Lincoln county. There were three children when they came; the eldest of these was Susannah Catherine, whose memory we now honor. She was born November 2, 1829.  She received her education in the private schools provided by her parents and others. Her social life and religious training of those early days were refining and spiritual. The children in the home were, beside herself, Martha Isby, Jacob Berger, Abram Cowper, Christiana, Elizabeth Cloe, Mary Leigh, Lucy Anna and Nathaniel Meacon. Mr. SHELTON had one son, Crispin SHELTON, by a previous marriage. In young manhood he went to California where he died in middle life. These all lived to be grown except Christiana who died in girlhood.

The 18th day of October, 1853, she was married to Mr. Peachy G. SHELTON. To them God gave four children, Willie Claiborne, now Mrs. Chas. MARTIN, Ashley Cowper, Charles Richard, and Robert Saunders who married Miss Bird GRANDFIELD and died January 23, 1896, leaving his widow and three children. Ashley and Chas. died in infancy.

Brother and Sister SHELTON made a public profession of faith in Jesus Christ and were baptized into the fellowship of Troy church the third Sunday in October, 1873. Brother SHELTON was taken from earth September 11th, 1912. Sister SHELTON, seeking temporary change of surroundings, went to St. Louis September 30th for a visit in the home of her brother-in-law, Deacon Thomas H. HAMMOND. Sunday the 6th she attended the services at the Third Baptist Church. She spent part of Sunday afternoon in the open air and seemed invigorated and cheerful. She was taken ill about 12:30a.m. Monday. Everything that love and professional skill could do was done. The final moment came at 3 o'clock a.m. October 8, 1912.

Sister SHELTON was a christian woman, exemplifying the faith, hope and love of revealed truth.  She was true to every relationship in life. It was a joy to be in her home; she loved her home and made it radiant for others, she loved her family and gave them the life and instruction that molds for earth and heaven those who follow her footsteps.   She loved the church with a tenderness and fellowship that were inspiring and adorning. She adored God with all her heart and she walked in the light of his presence. Her personal graces, her gentle life, her unwavering faith, her abiding love, which seemed to overflow to all the world, made her the blessing she was to earth.  By the grace of God she now wears the crown that fades not away.

Sister SHELTON is survived by her daughter, Sister MARTIN, husband and four children, Mrs. R.S. SHELTON and children, and two brothers, Deacon Jacob G. SHELTON of Montgomery county and Judge Nathaniel M. SHELTON of Macon City.
