Obituary for Mary Madeline Schafer (1882-1915)

Mary Madeline SCHAFER, the daughter of David and Clara F. CLARK, was born in Lincoln
county, October 11, 1882, and died at the home of her parents in Moscow Mills May 29,
1915, at 8:30 p.m.
She was married to James SCHAFER September 22, 1904. To their married life 4 children were
born, two of whom are dead and two living. The living are Lucille, aged 6 years, and Mary
Florence, an infant at the time of her mother's death. During the first part of Mr. and
Mrs. SCHAFER's married life, they lived in Moscow Mills, but about five years ago they
moved to Hannibal, which place has since been their home.
In November, 1909, she became a member of the Christian church, uniting with the
congregation at this place under the ministry of Bro. CARR. After profession of her faith
in Christ as her Saviour, she lived a consistent Christian until the hour of her demise; a
faithful worker in the church, always ready and willing to do her part in every laudable
service.
She leaves her husband and two children, together with her father and mother and two
sisters, and a great number of other relativies to mourn her untimely taking away. The
sisters, Mrs. Dr. SHEPARD and Mrs. Carrie SCHROEDER, both reside in Moscow Mills. Because
of her kindly disposition and offices she made friends wherever she went, she was held in
affectionate regard and is now lamented by all who knew her. She remained conscious until
the end came, naming her infant child just before she passed out of this earthly sphere.
The funeral services were conducted at the Christian church in Moscow Mills at 1 o'clock
p.m. Monday, May 31, after which the mortal remains were laid to rest near those of her
deceased children in the beautiful Troy cemetery. The large number of those who attended
these obsequies was mute but emphatic testimony to the sterling worth and high esteem in
which Mrs. SCHAFER was held. She will be greatly and sadly missed in many places and by
many people, but most of all in that sorrow stricken family and home which she loved so
well and where she was so dearly loved in return. The heartfelt sympathy of the entire
community goes out to the heart broken husband, father, mother and sisters.

Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection": Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO. She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
