Obituary for Margaret Genestelle Browning Jennings (1875-1911)
No. 072 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

Margaret Genestelle BROWNING was born in Lincoln county, Mo., October 13, 1875; died at her home in Kiowa, Oklahoma, Feb. 1, 1911.

She was married to Garrett G. JENNINGS, June 23, 1904, and became the mother of two children.

Sister JENNINGS joined the Methodist church in Troy, Mo., under the ministry of Rev. J. M. MAJOR, and was received by baptism the 28th of January, 1904. Those who knew her intimately during the years since she gave her heart to Christ testify to her consistent, godly life. She moved her membership to the Methodist church in Oklahoma in 1907, and served faithfully in the church there. She attended a service of her church the evening before the day of the accident that so quickly took her away. At this service she offered a public testimony, and spoke of how precious the Savior was to her own heart and expressed the earnest desire that she might so live as to influence her entire household to follow Him.

Mrs. ROSS, an intimate friend of Sister JENNINGS who accompanied the husband and two little children to Troy with the body of their dear one, and who was with her friend from a short time after the accident until the end, bears witness to the beautiful example of unselfish heroism shown by her during her last hours. Almost unmindful of her own suffereing [sic], her concern was for her loved ones whom she was leaving. Her first thought was for the safety of her children. Then, when she knew they were safe, her care was for the father and mother and other members of the family back in Missouri. She was anxious lest the shock might be too great for them to bear, when they should hear of the manner of her death. She talked of the future of her family, gave advice concerning the children, and directions about other matters pertaining to the family welfare. But her greatest concern was for their spiritual well-being. She wanted her children brought up in the nurture of the Lord. The last names upon her lips were those of her husband and mother. After speaking their names she went to sleep in Jesus. She was not afraid to die, for she had tried the strength of Him who conquered death and the grave, and knew Him to be a Mighty Savior as she passed through the valley of the shadow of death. She had a faith vision of the City Beautiful, and we believe she has bone [sic] there to dwell forever.

--M.

The body of Mrs. G.G. JENNINGS, whose death occured at Kiowa, Okla., on the 1st, arrived last Thursday afternoon, accompanied by her husband, and children, her niece and Mrs. Dr. ROSS, one of her most intimate friends. The funeral took place at the Troy Methodist church Friday afternoon and the interment was at the city cemetery. The large attendance from both town and country evidenced the esteem in which she was held and the sympathy of our people for the bereaved family. Mrs. JENNINGS' death was caused by gasoline, a bottle which she held in her hand exploding when she threw some feathers into the stove. The burning fluid was scattered over her body and she was fatally burned before the flames could be extinguished. She called to her niece, Miss Emily WARD, who was in an adjoining room, to come and take the children, and they were saved through her efforts. One of them is a little over three years old and the other less than a year. Mr. JENNINGS will take them with him when he returns to Oklahoma.

Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection":  Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO.  She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
