Obituary for Laura McCabe (Wright) Dyer (1846-1908)
No. 041 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

The entire county and surrounding country was suddenly and sadly afflicted Sunday, April 5, 1908, when the announcement went out that death had claimed the body of Mrs. David DYER of Owen, Mo.

Miss Laura McCabe WRIGHT (whose parents died while she was but an infant) was reared from childhood in the home of her uncle, Jefferson WRIGHT, a Baptist minister who resided near Wentzville, Mo. Having thus been tenderly cared for, substantially provided for and having implanted in her life the principles of love, carefulness, and sympathy, she grew to mature womanhood.

June 3, 1869, at the age of 23 years, she was united in marriage to David A. DYER. To this union were born nine children (all living)-three daughters and six sons. The daughters are Mrs. Thos. BLAND, of St. Louis; Mrs. C.H. CHRISTIANSEN, of Owen, and Miss Mattie, who remains with her father. The sons are John and Otis, of Chicago; George W., Moscow Mills; Alex of St. Louis, and Dayton and Schap, of Owen.

At the beautiful country home there stand in the front yard eleven evergreen trees, representing each member of the family. It was really touching to hear the little grandson, Birkhead DYER (who spent many happy days with his grandparents) say: "Mamma Dyer's tree is dead now." Mrs. DYER was a real treasure in the home, a benefaction to the community. She was one of those fond mothers full of hope and aspiration, with a desire to live an active life until her children should become of age. God graciously spared this kind mother by permitting a year to go by in excess of that time. Mamma DYER was 62 years and 23 days old at the time of her death.

The funeral was conducted at the home by S.L. PALMER, pastor of the Baptist church at Owen Mo., who used as a scriptural text Rom. 8:28. Although it was a rainy day above two hundred sympathetic friends gathered to pay the last tribute of respect to one whose personal worth will long be cherished.

At 2:30 p.m. April 7th, 1908, the body of Mamma DYER was lain in the cemetery at Troy, Mo. Mixed with the sorrow and sadness of the hour there was beauty. Six sons (men) bore to its resting place the body of their mother.

--S.L. Palmer

Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection":  Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO.  She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents.
