Uthe Homestead

The homestead of Christian Gottfried UTHE and Frau Margaretha KELLERMAN UTHE
who came to America from Wurtemberg, Germany about 1854. 

This wattle house, located northwest of Old Monroe, was made of interwoven sticks and mud.  The attic was used as a refuge for Union Soldiers during the Civil War.   The door was heavily barred with a porthole window.  This house was in the midst of the Luxembourg skirmishes.  Pictured here are Gustave, son of Christian and Margaretha Uthe, his wife, Lena and their son, Fred..
